VCA JUDGING SCHEME JUDGING COMPETENCIES
A competent judge will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding that the breed standard for each breed underpins all dog judging
- Demonstrate an ability to interpret a breed standard
- Display a high level of knowledge of canine terminology
- Demonstrate an ability to talk in dog terminology
- Demonstrate an understanding of anatomical construction relevant to each breed
- Demonstrate an understanding of anatomical construction peculiar to certain breeds in a specific group
- Demonstrate an ability to relate breed standards to breed function
- Demonstrate an ability to correctly describe breed characteristics
- Demonstrate an ability to recall, recognise and assess specific breed characteristics from the breed standard e.g. height/weight/colour/coat
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise correct breed type
- Demonstrate consistent application and understanding of breed type
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise quality
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise size
- Demonstrate an ability to explain proportions
- Demonstrate an ability to explain how proportions relate to breed function
- Demonstrate an ability to evaluate correct balance for each breed
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise balance as it relates to movement for that breed
- Approach a dog correctly and appropriately for that breed and demonstrate an ability to properly handle a dog in a purposeful manner
- Demonstrate an ability to assess all parts of the dog
- Mouth a dog correctly
- Demonstrate a capability to read about dog breeds and an ability to write critiques
- Demonstrate an ability to be able to justify placings in judging a specific breed and a group of different breeds
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise and assess the differences between breeds and/or exhibits
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise and assess specific breed movement
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise correct coats, correct coat texture and correct coat preparation
- Demonstrate appropriate deportment, manners and ring skills
- Demonstrate fairness and consistency in assessing each breed and/or specimen
- Demonstrate control, organisation and effective use of the judging ring
- Demonstrate an ability to make decisions in an effective way and in an efficient time frame
- Demonstrate a practical knowledge of stewarding
- Demonstrate an ability to understand and apply the regulations relevant to dog judging
